VHS tape is 7-1/3" X 4" x1", so VHS storage cases may be something to consider.

That IS a good idea! My board will approx be 21cm x 10cm, since I'm sticking two of them together. I think that comes to about 8.25 inches wide, by about 4 inches deep.
Just for updates sake, here are some I'm looking at:
Main thing, besides size, is I want smooth edges and pretty thin. I know it's weird, but I want this computer to be "handheld", even if it's a bit clunky.
If a 3D printer is an option, I can recommend the Ender 3. It's less than $200 and mine has worked flawlessly out of the box from the first print 2+years ago up until today without having to tweak or tune anything. Making a little box only takes a few lines in OpenSCAD.
Gordon's suggestion about laser cutting acrylic is another neat idea. You can get a simple laser cutter for less than a 3D printer. This past week I did a project and found that 1/8 inch acrylic will break cleanly after being scored with a box cutter if you don't need need millimeter precision. The hardware store had 3/4 inch tall nuts that look like standoffs built to take a bolt in either side that you could use to hold two sheets together. The hot glue at the local craft store turned out to be absurdly strong, however, so I went with that and plastic spacers instead of drilling holes in the acrylic.
Another somewhat new option is making a PCB and selecting aluminum as the board material. You can have a silkscreen and holes put into it without any traces and use it as a face plate or part of your box.
