His choice of key labels is sure a mystery to me! I have like the Grayhill type 87 key switches that mount on 1/2" centers in standard perfboard and have clear removable caps that you can put your own labels under, but they have gotten rather expensive and are no longer widely stocked. Here's another look at some of the Grayhill product. The pins on the back are .025" square and on a .1" grid, and I could've wire-wrapped directly onto them. But for the KK computer I used some female wire-wrap header as a socket, making the keypad removable. This let me mount it on top of a VIA and some other chips, maximizing use of the board area.
The LED display also is removable; it has another VIA underneath.
In 1988 my 65C02 got six new registers and 44 new full-speed instructions!

Yes I had look at other matrix type keypads .. the issue with most of them was they did not have enough keys ..most were 4x4 or even 4x5 .. and not that cheap ..but what you will find is that most older micro keypads require 20+ keys for full operation.. so yes you can use a 4x4 matrix and add additional keys ..but bit messy ..

It's nice when they make them so you can stack them any way you like and put your own labels under the transparent key caps, as is possible with the types shown so far. Grayhill 87 comes in single keys, doubles, and on up, and you can stack them to get non-stocked array sizes. Edit: I see your added pictures in the head post now on the different sizes of key arrays on the other type as well.

If it isn't off-topic, may I ask if anyone has tried using an infrared remote control as a keypad for a system project? This little HX1838 Remote uses one of the NEC IR protocols and currently sells for $1.69 USD on eBay (including shipping to USA);
I'd like to try using something like this as the keypad on a 65SC04 demo board design (see one of my board layout candidates below). The NEC protocol timing is based on ~562.5 microsecond intervals. Does anyone foresee any problems trying to implement receive code for this on a 1-MHz system?
