A valid kim-1 serial option?

Post by RonH »

Hi All,
I have been looking various ways to connect my KIM-1 to my laptop.
I see various ways to do this and I think I get the idea. I could start ordering stuff.

But I happen to actually have these TTL/RS232 converters...

https://us.amazon.com/Female-Male-C...o ... 4304466358

... (one of each gender) AND I have this RS232/USB converter...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007T27H8?re ... tle_1&th=1

Will it be safe and effective to use these (with no other parts) to connect my laptop to the KIM-1?
Specifically, can I connect the KIM-1 (on the left) to the TTL/RS232 adapter (on the right) like this....

A-R-|---+---(Vcc)
. . . . . . . .|
. . . . . . . .|
A-S-|---+

A-U-|-------(>)

A-T-|-------(<)

A-21|-----+
. . . . . . . . . .|
. . . . . .. . . . \ switch (closed enables TTY)
. . . . . . . . . .|
A-V |-----+

And then of course...

Connect TTL/RS-232 adapter to RS232/USB adapter.
Connect RS232/USB adapter to the laptop.
What do you think?
Is it safe? Will it work?
I'm holding back because I sure don't want to hurt the KIM-1.
Any advice appreciated!

Hi, RonH.

I'm not adequately qualified to answer your hardware question, but you can make your text diagram easier for us to read by editing your post and surrounding it with

Code: Select all

 and
respectively.
Got a kilobyte lying fallow in your 65xx's memory map? Sprinkle some VTL02C on it and see how it grows on you!

You can't connect +5V TTL directly to the KIM, it's expecting 20mA current loop. There are KIM-1 serial boards which will do this conversion for you, or you can wire up one of the off-the-shelf current loop to RS-232 converters. Also run it at 300bps, it tends to drop characters in spurts at higher speeds (the ROM routines were really meant for teletypes).

6502inside is correct, however you could use a couple of opto couplers and possibly a transistor or two to convert between current loop and TTL.

The "diagram" refers to the "A" edge connector on the KIM-1.

As noted, the | characters are the edge of the KIM-1, function labels to the left, connections and purposes to the right.
