The SP0256-AL2 produces all 59 phonemes of the English language plus 5 pauses of different lengths. Each of the phonemes are individually addressable which makes the SP0256 capable of saying anything which can be said in the English language. Other fun speech chips: SC-01 which makes for a fun robotic voice. Think Q-bert, Gorf or Wizard of Wor.

Or the TMS5200 or TMS5220....

I've used the SP0256-AL2 on both Apple and C-64. I didn't think the quality was all that great - but it was fun to play with.

Don't forget the technique used by David Hoskin's "Speech!" (video link) for the BBC micro - it used the 3-channel sound chip in an unusually creative way to produce speech. Some info here too.

Chuck, the 76477 can only do some mild sound effects, it wasnt capable of speech unless you got cute in switching which you can do with most any volume port. Reference the 1 bit speech synthesizer on te Apple 2 called SAM: Software Activated Mouth....
