Speech Chip
Part No.: Z733

Quote:
The SP0256-AL2 produces all 59 phonemes of the English language plus 5 pauses of different lengths. Each of the phonemes are individually addressable which makes the SP0256 capable of saying anything which can be said in the English language. This is the easiest approach to univeral speech synthesis and the speech quality is that of a good robot voice. Search the net and you will find loads of reference to the use of this chip in robots, with masses of circuit ideas and chip specification.

Other fun speech chips: SC-01 which makes for a fun robotic voice. Think Q-bert, Gorf or Wizard of Wor.

Or the TMS5200 or TMS5220....

I've used the SP0256-AL2 on both Apple and C-64. I didn't think the quality was all that great - but it was fun to play with.

There is also a chip called the Speakjet:

And there is another chip:

It says there are few connections required to operate.

I also saw this for the Arduino on the internet:
ginsing

After listening to Ginsing, I think I want to build version 2.

The Ginsing is a Microchip pic:

It is also possible to do sound on a Microchip pic:

Don't forget the technique used by David Hoskin's "Speech!" (video link) for the BBC micro - it used the 3-channel sound chip in an unusually creative way to produce speech. Some info here too.

Chuck, the 76477 can only do some mild sound effects, it wasnt capable of speech unless you got cute in switching which you can do with most any volume port. Reference the 1 bit speech synthesizer on te Apple 2 called SAM: Software Activated Mouth....
