Want to build a 6502 computer but don't know where to start

Post by Naln1 »

As mentioned in the title, I want to build a computer based on the 6502. I have only a very little bit of knowledge on 6502 assembler, and I know what the pins do on a 6502, but not much else. Pretty much my only criteria is some way to drive a display (S-video or VGA, preferably) and a BASIC interpreter. All of the projects similar to what I want to make (that I could find) are either taken down from the web, or aren't documented start to finish. It'd be great if I could get some pointers on what I might need (other than a 6502, breadboards, and wires) and where to start.

Thanks in advance for any help~

Welcome, Naln1 :)

In the "where to start" department, I refer you to Garth's 6502 PRIMER: Building your own 6502 computer. There's a wealth of information there, tailored to the needs of people like you. And folks on the forum are often willing to offer specific advice, within reason. Just try to avoid asking questions which are already answered in the Primer! (Asking for clarification is OK, though.)

Depending on your level of experience, video may well be something you should save for phase two of your project. It's an important question, regarding which I suggest you read the advice recently given to this would-be builder.

cheers!
Jeff
In 1988 my 65C02 got six new registers and 44 new full-speed instructions!
