Hi all,

i've got a real difficult time making TIDE from wdctools run on W10.
it gives me error's of missing symbol file, the (text) editor shows no file content ect ect... (uedit and notepas++)

so basicly , what can i use as a good alternative to program in, and to upload it to my w65c265sxb board.. ?

coz'at the moment, i'm not even getting the led blink to work :x

Which version of TIDE are you using? There's at least two different ones out there.... I'm using Win7 in a VM under Fusion with TIDE version 2.05.0. Granted, TIDE is not that great of a front end, but for what I use of it, it works for me. I also have version 2.04.3 which works under Win7.

I just use the assembler and linker driven from a Makefile, Microsoft NMAKE and some batch files.

I edit in Notepad++, save the file and double click a batch file icon in a windows explorer that invokes make to build the (targets). My batch files pause if make exits with an error so I can see the messages in the command shell window.

My W65C265SXB hacker firmware is written this way. See here https://github.com/andrew-jacobs/w65c265sxb-hacker

Hi,

I use the 2.05.0 version. basic win10 as admin -> symbol error
2.05.0 win10 (compatible mode win7) same thing..

@ BitWise
i can live with a batch file that does the MAKE process,
looked at your makefile and asm files, but they look to be different (header wise) than the
ones i have, that's why i get a lot of errors when building the hex files..
(i'll look further into it over the weekend..)

it's just that i'm looking for a good editor/assembler program (IDE) to code in
pref. one that can execute the batch program from with in.. (like tide does)

(does CBM prg studio work for the W65Cxxx ?!, it does have 6502/6510/65816 support..)

(edit: some typos and added some better explanations)

I recently downloaded and installed TIDE on an XP laptop and then tried assembling the 65c265 rom source file I converted from pdf to txt. I thought this would be a good easily accessible mechanism for others to be able to modify the source for their own wants or needs.

Unfortunately the assembler spit out a bunch of errors and then mangled the source file stripping all carriage returns.

I don't have UltraEdit so I tried defining the editor as NotePad. That didn't work. Is UltraEdit the only usable editor in TIDE?

The assembler only "liked" *.asm files. After changing the file name from *.txt to *.asm the assembler accepted the file but then complained of errors and mangled the source file.

Cheers,
Andy

That is unacceptable and infuriating behavior, and would cause me to discard it immediately.

I've been using the WDC Tools package for almost 7 years now. I've never had it corrupt any source files... I have to doubt it would be the cause of a corrupted source. It would be worth contacting WDC to see if they've ever seen such a problem.

Yeah, this post might upset some, but WDC don't do a very good job of documenting or keeping their tool set current.

In fact, the situation is just pathetic. No system requirements defined, no install and initial configuration process. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Free or not, these tools are supposed to support their products, right? They should be slick, well documented and at the very least, updated to be installed and be configured on a supported operating system with guiding documentation.

It sometimes seems like WDC have given up and are just waiting for the rot to take hold. I imagine a warehouse with a single shipping employee to ship out defective W65C51S chips, yeah 'n some other stuff too...

Well, yea... that's a tough one. In some ways, I would have to say keeping a toolset current makes sense if you're supporting additional products over time. As the processors supported haven't changed, there's really nothing to add. On the other hand, providing an updated version that's designed to run on newer (current and supported) versions of Windows would be a nice plus. Personally, I'd prefer a native OSX version... but that's unlikely to ever happen.

Unfortunately, documentation has never been touted as their strong point here on the forum, and will a small team, it's one of those things that we all live with out here... and at least there's a lot of experienced folks here that have helped sort much of that out.

I don't think (nor do I have any factual data) that WDC sell a ton of chips these days, but more than likely license a softcore as IP for inclusion in other products. I probably understand the W65C51 bug issues better than most, as I figured it out initially... and actually purchased about 15+ chips and picked up a logic analyzer along the way, which I also used to work through the problem. The cold hard reality is the existing inventory of chips will likely never sell out, so the cost of replacing them isn't really going to happen. It's a shame overall, as I did do a couple SBC setups that used the 65C51, hoping for (working) WDC versions that would run at 14MHz. But I've also moved on to newer UART chips now, so it's a moot point.

I also would have liked to see the ancient 6522 serial port bug fixed, but alas... hasn't happened. Still, they make new CMOS parts for the hobby world that are reasonably priced and answer emails from private individuals. For me, I've managed to get a nice working development setup, but I've been building custom machines for decades based on my own requirements, and keep current on several OSes and certain software like VMware, which adds a lot of flexibility. It's not a perfect (dev) environment... but what really is? One thing is clear, there are a lot of choices for 6502/65816 development still available, and some folks are still looking to write another assembler, who knew.

Assemblers, Forths, interpreters, VMs, FP packages, SBCs, MMUs ... I know it's not nice to make broad generalizations, but I suspect that for more than a few of us the journey is at least as important as the destination. :)

I can certainly go along with that. Some of the projects I work at are 100% about the journey. I get an Idea and just want to create it. Most I do use in the investigation of other ideas/projects but even in those cases the process of beginning with an idea and ending up with a working device is the bigger part of the reason I do it.
