I had a ROM, a RAM, a VIA, and the 'C02, and I was using a deconstructed Cat6 cable for the connections. I don't know quite what was going on, but I couldn't get anything sensible out of it.

I'm not saying it's impossible to achieve reliable operation on a breadboard, just that I wasn't able to do it.
