Good question... should be direct. I'm using this one which replaces a DB-9 connector (you just jumper out the RS-232 level conversion):

If Adafruit is using the FT-232R chip directly to the connections, then they would be active low to match the 6551.

I believe it's straight to the FT232R, yes. Okay, well I'll try this out. I look forward, optimistically, to coming back to report success!

Since the 6551 pins are labelled as /RTS and /CTS, do I need to invert the signals between there and the FTDI cable?

I believe, what is suitable for 16550 IC's without extra inversions (no complaints heard ?), that should be suitable for 6551 too.

I popped up on here around the start of the year asking for help with my simple 6502 SBC; I was having trouble getting my 6551 running. Lots of people provided tremendously useful information, which helped me with issues I didn’t understand, but then things got busy at work and I didn’t have time to come back to my project.

Well, I got back to it yesterday, rebuilt it from scratch (since I was suffering from flakiness in my breadboard), and got it all working just moments ago! It’s sitting here right now running a minimal monitor I wrote earlier this year via emulator, and I can poke tiny programs into RAM and run them. The excitement of finally seeing this running is tremendous. And I couldn’t have done it without the fabulous people on this forum! What an amazing community.

I have all sorts of plans for this to do with this little board… and some other bigger projects now that I’ve taken this first step. Right now, though, I’m going to stop and savor the moment! Thanks all!

That first hurdle of getting the hardware working is always the big one. Congratulations.

Yes, as you can imagine, that is HIGH on the list of updates and corrections...
