I would like to use a 6510 for a project, but I cannot find it. My local IC supply store dosen't have it, and my Jameco catalog dosen't have it either. Can anyone point me to somewhere I can get a 6510?

But PLEASE make sure it is broken. It should be a crime to take a working C64 and gut it.

by the way - is 8500 just equal to 6510 except 6510 is NMOS and 8500 is HMOS-II ?

I think it has one or two additional I/O pins for the integrated I/O port as well.

They're not in the Commodore 128 Programmers Reference Manual? That would be a shock to me, since the C64 PRM had the full specs for the chips used therein.
