Anyone know where I can obtain 6504 or 6507 microprocessors?

Hi Andy,
Jameco carried the 6504 for years but a quick search on their site didn't turn up anything. Still, you might inquire with them to see if they have any small amount of stock left. I know that the 6504 was used in very old Commodore products in the PET/CBM line like the 4022 printer and disk drives such as the 8250.
This 6504 is more attractive than the 6507 because it has the IRQ interrupt. While the 6507 has no interrupt capability it is much easier to obtain, you can get one out of an Atari 2600. It may be labelled with a strange number other than 6507 though, check my 6504-based SBC page for to match the numbers. You can get an old Atari at most trift stores, garage sales, or online auctions. You will have to desolder the chip, I have never seen one socketed.
If you don't manage to turn up one of these chips send me an e-mail and I'll dig through my chips, I'm sure I have one I can send you.

Thanks, it's not in their catalogue but as you suggest I'll drop them an email and cross my fingers! =o)

Oh no, that means I used to have a bunch! Never mind I guess the PETs were a bit heavy to schlepp across the Atlantic
with me =o)

The IRQ would certainly be useful, but I can probably getaway with polled i/o for my first few 650x experiments.

<grin> I had one of those in Britain too! I'll have to see if I can find one over here somewhere... perhaps I'll put a
socket on the 2600 planar in case I start to suffer from Pac-Man withdrawal! <grin>

Actually i had taken apart a 2600 a long time ago, and they are socketed 6507, not soldered.
