Commodore is back ...

Post by fachat »

You may have heard it already, but youtuber Christian Simpson aka Perifractic has acquired the rights to the (some/most...?) Trademarks of Commodore, and has new C64 - based on Gideon's FPGA-based Ultimate boards - for pre order.

I ordered one including some merch... this has already arrived, my new C64 is still on pre order...

Edit: not sure why (for me at least) the picture is rotated...

NIce mug... I like a good mug.

Here's a link to the new Commodore with their starts-at-$299 product offering
https://www.commodore.net/

As noted, it's been launched, and they have not yet shipped.

Edit: worth mentioning, the FPGA design is based on Gideon's
https://ultimate64.com/
and Gideon is involved in this project. (For previous mention of his work, see here)

Thinking about this recently. Half wonder how much of the IP he was able to acquire.

Specifically, did that include the designs for the various MOS chips (E.g. VIC, VIC-II, Paula, etc.) and what would the possibility of getting some small runs of replacement chips made for people that want to restore some of the older machines.

I don't think any chip designs would have been part of the deal. (And I don't think replacements could be made at reasonable prices in the sorts of volumes that might sell.)

I would even assume that the designs etc have been lost for a long time. It's probably only the license that has been passed on ...

This was purely a trademark acquisition, across various existing national jurisdictions that had the mark maintained. Some expired, and other companies re-registered it (I think Italy is a sore spot there).

There have been licensing agreements with Cloanto regarding some of the software licensing, but I think that's as far as any actually technical IP goes as far as I know.

My only piece of Commodore Equipment among all my 6502 equipment. Unfortunately it's not a computer.

Very nice. I have a couple of the Commodore AM radios.

(... and a lot of other Commodores.)
