Hey Guys;

When I was in school (early 1980's) we got a little training on the 6502 processor with a "KIM" and my first computers were VIC20's & C64's which I believe also used a 6502 processor (please correct me if I'm mistaken).

Anyways my son has the machine language programing bug and wants to start off on a small scale with the 6502 processors.

My question is this fellows, exactly what processor is contained within these Commodore computers and can I practically use them for some 6502 programming? How can I write the code?

any advice would be welcome...

I don't know what is in the commodore for sure, but I think its a 6510

Apple II's can be had for cheap and include built in system monitor
and mini assembler. You can directly enter machine language manually
easily.

hass some good assemblers too.

The commodore has better sprite based graphics.

The apple II is ffun to program because graphics pages are memory
mapped. So is the text screen. Dealing with graphics involves
moving, rotating data around. Learn alot about how to program
and how the processor works by learning how to program the
graphics output of the computer.

The commodore also has a nice sound chip. the apple II has a clickable speaker... Apple II has slots and hard drives easily
and cheaply available. I don't know if commodore has HD's available.

Although the C64 didn't have slots like the Apple II, its user and expansion ports are quite flexible and easy to use.

I thumbed through a Commodore magazine about ten years ago in a book store, and remember seeing advertisements for hard discs up to 100MB for the C64. That was a lot of disc space back then. It was quite a few more years before I finally needed more than 20MB on my PC.
