I just tested that with Termite(I don't know how to send raw bytes easily using PuTTY), and Carriage Return does the full CRLF. Line Feed does nothing.

Better to have the regulator soldered in place (rather than socketed), I'd say. And, located right at the regulator, I hope you have a cap from its input to ground and another from its output to ground.

You've admitted the wiring is messy, and it's possible to get away with that, I know (cough, cough ). But visual appear is one thing, and actual functionality of the connections is another. The stuff does need to conduct in all the right places (and be free of shorts in the wrong places). Otherwise you're facing an uphill battle, trying to debug software when the machine itself is somewhat of a question mark.

Do please post that schematic when it turns up. Some photos might be helpful, too.

I have a 10uF electrolytic from input to ground, but not on the other side. Also, I'd not soldered the regulator on so I wouldn't have to unsolder it later when I go to put this on a PCB, if I don't use a more efficient type, which I will before I stop fooling with the hardware.
I have attached photos and a schematic.
Maybe I should create a dedicated thread over this machine.

EDIT: I should also mention that I really don't want to change much of the current prototype. It's a royal pain to change around wires under there.
