Better to have the regulator soldered in place (rather than socketed), I'd say. And, located right at the regulator, I hope you have a cap from its input to ground and another from its output to ground.
You've admitted the wiring is messy, and it's possible to get away with that, I know (cough, cough
). But visual appear is one thing, and actual functionality of the connections is another. The stuff
does need to conduct in all the right places (and be free of shorts in the wrong places). Otherwise you're facing an uphill battle, trying to debug software when the machine itself is somewhat of a question mark.
Do please post that schematic when it turns up. Some photos might be helpful, too.
