Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

BUMP

What ever became of this project?
Woah. It's hard to believe that its been more than a year since I last posted an update.

In short, I finished stuffing my PCB, tested the board to the best of my (limited) abilities and then didn't really do much with it for a few months (I was more ...

Re: Side Project - 65c02 ProtoBrick

I have been looking at the RC2014 and I think that something like that would certainly be really cool looking (if a bit less cost effective than the shield / stack system).

Cbmeeks, have you put any thought into the design of such a system? If so, would you care to work on a sort of standardized ...

Re: Z80, 8086, 6502 and 65k opinions?

I love the 6502 for its simplicity. It is probably the best microprocessor for beginners who want to be able to build their own microcomputer and understand how the entire thing works (as Garth said, it is very well documented and there are tons of example projects that newbies can draw inspiration ...

RAM Iso.PNG
The system has headers for the data, address, and other 6502 bus lines as well as connections to the rx and tx pins of the USB connector (could be used by a serial board).

Re: Side Project - 65c02 ProtoBrick

I played around with such a design prior to designing my SBC. It certainly is not the most cost effective design, but it has the advantage of being fully modular.

Here are a few pics of my take on such a system.

Re: Small alternatives to the W65C51 ACIA and W65C22 VIA

To be clear, I only need some sort of parallel interface controller and some sort of serial interface controller. Both of these can be realized using Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). SPI chips tend to be small, partly because fewer pins are required (as compared with a chip whose host interface ...

Re: Small alternatives to the W65C51 ACIA and W65C22 VIA

I like having a seperate MPU, RAM, and ROM as it makes the system feel less like a "magic chip that does everything".

The microcontroller versions of the 6502 and 65816 have internal registers that allow the use of external RAM and ROM.
But I want all of the RAM, ROM, and IO to be external. It ...

Re: Small alternatives to the W65C51 ACIA and W65C22 VIA

Have you considered using one of the micro-controller versions of the processor like the 65C134 or 65C265?

They need only a few external components and have a number of peripherals built in including ACIAs.

WDC's own development boards for these are much better priced (~$100) than the full ...

Re: Small alternatives to the W65C51 ACIA and W65C22 VIA

Some of the 65c22's counter/timer functions that come to mind other than just as a timer which come to mind are:
setting the speed of the onboard synchronous serial port
event counter
frequency counter (how many transitions counted on one counter/timer during the number of Φ2 cycles timed in ...

Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

My board finally arrived! I just realized that I forgot the sockets for the ICs and the crystal so I will have to wait until Wed. to finish stuffing the board.

The board looks really nice (props to Eurocircuits). I especially like the matte green soldermask!

Small alternatives to the W65C51 ACIA and W65C22 VIA

I am trying to make a *small* SBC using the W65C02S6TQG (QFP-44) and want to use as little board space as possible. The WDC datasheets show that there is indeed a QFP version of both chips but I can't seem to find any distributors that carry them. Does anyone know where I could purchase some QFP ...

Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

Components arrived but I am still awaiting my board. Now I really regret not choosing 7 day service (which was only $25 more than the 15 day service).

On a side note, I took a look at my 1210 SMD caps and resistors and it looks like I am going to have a fun time soldering them ;).

Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

Finally! I just finished my board + have submitted my order on Eurocircuits.

I had to add 0.25" on the top and bottom for a couple of 0.125" ID mounting holes which increased the price a little but will let me use some standoffs to keep the board off of my workbench.

I am about to submit my order ...

Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

Interestingly enough, my quote from Eurocircuits was $88 (incl. shipping and such) for a single board. When I tried the sites on your primer they all ended up ~$80 (for 5 boards, which is the minimum) but did not include shipping or tax. Unless I find a reason for having 4 extra boards (aside from ...

Re: Finally starting the schematic for my first W65C02 SBC

On a side note, would love any referrals as far as PCB houses go. So far I think my best bet is Eurocircuits (as they will let me order a single quad layer board for $75). I have looked at Advancedcircuits (too expensive w/o student discount and the student discount is only for college students ...
