One thing I noticed is that links to specific posts (rather that just the (start of the) thread) now end with, e.g. #p1234 whereas they use to end with #1234 (i.e. without the "p"), so a lot of old links are now broken. (Well, they seem to make it to the right thread, but not the particular post.) If this is easy to fix, it might be worth doing so.

Never heard of it. If in Windows, why not a .ZIP archive? Just about every user of Billy-ware knows about .ZIP files. Why do people insist on using off-the-wall file formats about which the average user knows nothing? This is as bad as folks sending me .XLS files, for which I have no software (I'm not an MS Office user).

Someone sent me a .rar recently. I had never heard of it, but my Linux knew immediately what to do with it. No problem.

When you want to make a archive file with WinRAR which is the most common archive program that i know for Windows, the default settings are set to .rar it can do also .zip, but you have to change the settings every time...

Did you find out why that text sequence can't be posted?

thought that rar was more common for macs, next to stuffit files.

Lots of spreadsheets will open XLS files, I think GMail will let you view them in the mail reader. I don't know if it will let you open them up in Google Docs or not.

OpenOffice/LibreOffice will read them, and it's free and runs on Win/Mac/Linux.

With the exception of .exe, the file types are all pretty standard, so you don't need Microsoft for any of them, either to create, view, edit, etc.. I use OpenOffice under Linux and I exchange .XLS files with people who use Gnumeric, MS Office, and something else I can't remember at the moment.

I don't do anything that involves Google. Google is not a trustworthy service.
