There's a special level of ironic Hell in the fact that people are this obsessed with buying an Original of something that was first and foremost a DIY kit computer.

Given how few Apple I machines were in the wild, I can't imagine the buyers of these machines actually used them back in the day. This seems more like buying it because it's rare, rather than a nostalgia purchase. That strikes me as a little sad because it's likely to end up in a box awaiting the future sale.

Yep. It’s not something you'd hang on a wall for everyone to admire. As for utility...well, I'd be afraid to power it for fear of an age-related catastrophic failure.

I think maybe I went in too high there - the estimate is shy of $500k and according to the table of recent sales $750k is a recent maximum.

There's a linked video of Woz signing the CPU chip. He says, I think: "Oh my god that's so precious, can I sign the chip?" is asked "Which is your favourite?" and responds "Yeah, the 6502" and then says something I can't make out about the 6501. I think he's saying the board also works with it - which, as a drop-in for the 6800, it indeed should.
