Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum and I need some help figuring out some board dimensions for the KIM-1 computer.

I have always been very interested in these early computers, seeing how much performance one could get out of these things. I read up a lot of literature about the KIM-1 computer but the availability of these old boards is really limited. I figured, as a PCB designer as sidejob, with the schematics and a good picture of the board, I'll build my own replica. One that's almost an exact clone (yes, I'll sacreligiously use regular film caps as I can't find the axial ones locally, BUT, I'll be sure to offer little daughter boards to be able to directly replace the 6530 and the ram with new components to counter this) , but cheap enough that it's accessible for everyone to enjoy a Kim-1!

I drew out all the chips now, I have the schematics done for the KIM-1, ready for the traces to be routed... BUT what the pics did not deliver me were accurate board dimensions!

Is there someone willing to provide these?
The length, the width, spacing in-between the connectors, exact size of the connectors, the tabs, etc.

Thank you for your message! I have seen this replica, but I want to build a real clone that is identical in size including the edge connectors and the same layout with the exact same chipset as the original. Besides, I am based in Europe. Shipping adds up quite a bit, the board is already on the expensive side so I'd like to add an alternative to the market for the hobbyists on this side of the atlantic!

Welcome, Mareijn. I can't help with dimensions, but I note that a Dave Williams has built something like an exact replica - maybe you can learn something from that. Maybe someone will come along who has the dimensions - you'll see from Hans' site that he has one, and he does visit here:

The level of detail in Dave's replica is really stunning, I'll do some more readings on his efforts.

I didn't come across Hans' site but I have a strong suspicion we share the same country so that might actually be a saving grace for this project. I'll reach out to him directly through his site

Note that at least you will have to go with 6532 instead of mask-programmed 6530 chips, and add a ROM with the program code separately (as this was mask-programmed into the 6530, which are not available anymore at all)
