Hello,

I have built a virtual reality headset for an 8-bit 6502 computer.

Previously, I built a 6502 breadboard computer:

https://hackaday.com/2019/04/19/a-nearl ... -computer/

Now I've created a virtual reality peripheral for that computer, called Vectron VR:

https://github.com/nickbild/vectron_vr

To demonstrate the system, I've developed the 3D game "Asteroids VR". Put the headset on and you'll be sitting in the 3D cockpit of a spaceship blasting away at asteroids that appear to be floating towards you.

I've got pictures, video, circuit diagrams, a bill of materials, and lots of descriptive text on my github page (https://github.com/nickbild/vectron_vr). My Vectron 64 computer (https://github.com/nickbild/vectron_64) is similarly documented, so it's possible for others to build their own complete system.

I hope it's of interest here!

Nick

Impressive!

I thought for a moment when I saw the mention of co-processing that you might have 2 6502's in there, however no...

Also - here's a thing: I have the ability to cross my eyes and un-cross them (a little) and "manually" re-focus. This sounds weird (I am not a robot!), but I'm one of the people who can see those stereogram pictures both ways as well as stereogram animations. I tried that trick on your video and didn't get much of a 3D effect, (the one on the left seems further away?) but the images did sync and focus up OK - so I'm wondering if there is a better trick to doing something like that... Might be worth a ponder at some point.

Cheers,

-Gordon

Ha! That's an unusual ability. When I look at the 2 screens out of the headset, I certainly can't see any 3D effect. In the case, with proper separation, alignment, and focusing lenses it's a pretty good effect, however. There's always another way, but in this case, I think my method works pretty well. Thanks for the feedback!

Very impressive! For me, I think the left asteroid is closest and the bottom one is furthest. (If the separation isn't too great, I can see stereo both ways too - looking past, and crossing eyes.)

Thanks! Glad to hear that some people are able to see something of a 3D effect without the full setup! I didn't even consider that that would be possible.

A good trick to get the 3d effect, play the youtube video on your phone in landscape and use your hand or a piece of paper along your nose and touching the screen. It will keep the left on the left and right on the right, and you will get some amount of stereo effect.

That's an interesting project. Sorry to go OT, but I have no love for Hackaday. It's like the YouTube for electronic projects. I don't care how great, simple, complex or amazing a project is, about 50-80% of the trolls post "why bother?", "it's stupid", "I'm so great and you wasted my time", etc.

Which is why I much prefer forums like this one.

So, back on topic...

Great job! Keep us posted.
