I was curious about the fastest way to do 8 bit packed BCD multiplication, so I tried it a few different ways to get the average cycles required. I ran all combinations from $00 x $00 to $99 x $99 in a loop in the simulator. For each one, I subtracted the loop overhead time from the total time and divided by 10,000 to get average cycles per calculation. Here are the results:

1. Repeated additions: 1,596
2. Repeated additions, smaller multiplicand in counter: 1,236.66
3. Shift/add: 300.8
4. 4x8 bit lookup table: 107
5. 4x8 bit lookup tables aligned to $x000: 103
6. Russian peasant algorithm: 274.02
7. Quarter squares with first half of table: 115.33
8. Quarter squares with whole table: 118

I also added checks for 0 and 1 to skip calculating, but using either or both of those was slower on average for all 8 methods, so I left them out.

4. 4x8 bit lookup tables (107 cycles)
Tables are stored as $0xyy where x is a 4 bit BCD number and yy is an 8 bit packed BCD number. Each table has a high and low section for the high and low values of the 16 bit answer. Table one has unshifted answers where $0xyy = x * yy and table two is shifted answers where $0xyy = x * yy0. Note that BCD mode is enabled and disabled to do pointer arithmetic.

5. 4x8 bit lookup tables aligned to $x000 (103 cycles)
Same as method five but the high and low parts of tables 1 and 2 are split up into four different files and each is aligned to $x000, so pointer arithmetic can be done in BCD mode.
Code: Same as method 4 without SED and CLD. Also, uses Table5 and Table 6 instead of Table1 and Table2.

6. Russian peasant algorithm (274.02 cycles)
Halving the smaller multiplicand is a little faster on average.

7. Quarter squares with first half of table (115.33 cycles)
I tried implementing the algorithm myself and ended up only using half the table that other algorithms I looked at later used. (This is not to save space, it just didn't occur to me to generate the second half since the first half is sufficient).

8. Quarter squares with whole table (118 cycles)
I tried to base this off the fast multiplication routine I found here:
http://codebase64.org/doku.php?id=base:seriously_fast_multiplication

In that version, the X register indexes into the table. I can't do the same thing by loading a BCD number into X, since it won't be added to the address in BCD format, so I calculate the address myself, like in method 7. Strangely, using the larger table is slightly slower as I have implemented it. I think it might be possible to improve this one. Any ideas?

With small look up tables to replace 4-bit shifts and the halving of the Russian peasant algorithm, I shaved off 4-16 cycles from routines 3-6.

I tried converting the BCD multiplicands to decimal with a look up table so I could use the faster quarter square algorithm. It finishes in 62 cycles on average and needs 24 more (86 total) to convert decimal back to BCD with a table.

I started working on a test using the ūrdhva tiryagbhyāṃ Sūtra for multiplication, though ran into a 4bit shift issue of my own (too many).
I can probably expand the table to get around it.

Basically, the idea was to break the single 8x8 multiply into four 4x4 multiplies where the results can be fetched from a lookup table.
The table address consists of the high and low nyble to be multiplied with the data containing the result.

Clocks in at 53 cycles, but with a 512 byte table. Unceremoniously non-tested and non-optimized. For BCD, you only need a 200 byte table.

I haven't studied this carefully, but even if X holds a BCD number, surely it can still index into a table, it's just that the table is a bit sparsely populated - 100 entries in a field of 256.

Right, but I don't think you can use X indexing into the square table for BCD numbers (unless that is what you are handling in the first few lines). Have you tested this way with BCD numbers?

I think I edited my post while you were writing an answer, but anyway, corrected code and statements are shown above (in previous post).

The code before the table is to calculate (a+b)/2 and (a-b)/2 for BCD.

You need to correct the LSR for BCD (both a-b and a+b). The only problem with LSR is if there is something in bit 4 before the LSR (=10) in which it ends in bit 3 afterwards (=8) which is 3 more than it should be. So by testing bit 3 and subtracting 3 (if its there) in both a and b, the result becomes correct (see here for a better explanation)

The lookup table is simply to get the square value of a number. There are 256 possible inputs for a byte, so 256 bytes in the table LSB and 256 bytes in the table MSB. For BCD you only have 100 possible inputs, but the table needs to cover as much memory as for a full byte since you can't start filtering out $A,$B,$C,$D,$E and $F values in the first or last 4-bit container of the byte..

I don't show the table (which you either need to type in manually or calculate in assembly), but it will work with BCD values if you make it point to BCD values:

table,X --> if X=25 in BCD this is 2=%0010 for first container and 5=%0101 for second, so X=%00100101 which will point to the 37'th value in the table. As the table is precalculated, that entry will contain 25^2 or 625, which is %00000110 for MSB (=06) and %00100101 for LSB (=25). And so on..

Oops, you're right, I do see now that the table indexing wouldn't work: $09+$09 is $12 in binary, but $18 in BCD, but you can also reach $12 with $10+$2 (in either sense) - so the table entry cannot correspond to a unique sum of BCD inputs.

I was also thinking the absolute fastest way would be to map three buffers into zero page that drive a 128k ROM and one address to read the output. That would be 32 cycles like this:

I wonder, would excess-3 notation be a better bet for this? Add $33 to both operands, and then the sum is $33 greater than the BCD sum - it all becomes very linear.

Hmm, I've never heard of this. The Wikipedia page says it was used in some calculators. So, I made a spreadsheet with $33 added to both operands but it still looks like there is overlap. Wouldn't adding $33 to both operands make it $66 greater than the BCD sum? Do you mean to add it as BCD or just a binary add? I tried all the combinations and there is still overlap.

I guess you are right there. We lose 0.5 in instances were one of the original numbers were odd, so doing a LSR is not going to work.

In fact, one should skip the division by two of the original numbers and double the array (to 512 words) to get a correct lookup table (and take that into account that you are retrieving a value 4 times what you intended). After subtraction you simply divide by 4.
