For my first project with MCU's im using the w65c265s, but I can't figure out if I need to generate a clock if it, and if I do, do I have to use a Crystal or Oscillator? Does anyone know?

Have you read the W65C265S data sheet? You are likely to find the answer to your question in it.

My memory says that the datasheet gives very specific, somewhat daunting, instructions on how to use two crystals.

The data sheet is quite unclear, not only to me but too a friend who knows much more about this then me.
As he said,
"See, it's not clear there whether it has internal oscillator elements
that just require an external crystal and can also operate with
resistor-capacitor type oscillators instead"

I guess I'll have to go look at the data sheet, because I sure remember it being specific. The one I have has very concise construction details.

I can't give it much time today, but I pulled out my old data sheet and found it to be very unclear as well. I have no doubt that you'll need something (not necessarily a whole oscillator) external, but it'll take time to find out if an RC will do it if you don't need the RS-232 or RTC or anything else that needs good accuracy. I don't have any experience with it. If it does require an external oscillator and you still don't need crystal accuracy, you could make one with a section of a 74xx14 and a resistor and capacitor.

Page 58 and 59 of the datasheet available on WDCs website shows their recommended clock circuits.

Darn--another WDC data-sheet booboo. Both crystals are labeled "XTAL1". Apparently the real XTAL1 is the lower one, and the one above it is XTAL2. I expect the variable capacitor is to trim the accuracy of the 4MHz crystal. Although it says 4MHz for the crystal there, page 3 says it goes to 8MHz.
