Welcome!

There are lots of good books on programming the 6502. I think the best one is "Programming the 65816 including the 6502, 65C02, and 65802" by David Eyes and Ron Liechty. This is a .pdf file of a rather large book that is well laid out and is much better than the description there lets on. Although it covers the 65816 also, you can ignore those parts until after you've gotten a good handle on the '02; but it does cover the 65c02 also (ie, CMOS version of the 6502) which has a lot of benefits over the original NMOS 6502, including more instructions and addressing modes, which most 6502 programming books and sites don't cover.

There are web pages where you can download (for free) lots of scanned books on various computer families, including programming, like these:
There are some Z80 books mixed in there. I don't know why, except I think the C128 had both a Z80 and a 6502. Just ignore those. You will find 6502 programming books though.

When you get down to the realities of typing your first programs into an assembler, take a look at section 18 of the 6502 primer, called, "Program-Writing: Where Do I Start?" and section 20, called "Tips For Programming the 65(c)02 (sometimes affecting hardware design optimization)." The 6502 primer is mostly about hardware and making your own 6502 computer, but forum posts indicated that these programming things needed to be answered.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?
