The online distributors usually have all the data sheets available there, so you can look the the dimensions of the IDCs. Just grabbing one here and measuring with the dial caliper, I get .680" for a 10-pin, .890" for a 16-pin, and 1.190" for a 20-pin. They're all different brands.

This really should have occurred to me. I've now re-re-re-jigged ( ) the layout so that there should (hopefully!) be enough room:

That's probably only just about enough room. See: http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20She ... WR-BHD.pdf

Those 100mil box headers are huge, in both directions. By my rough calcs you need just over 200mils on each side. I would find a nice footprint for your IDC box headers.

EDIT: Sorry Garth, didn't see your post (bottom of the page etc). You're of course right, you should check the manufacture's datasheet, since they are all likely subtly different.

The biggest pin headers are the shrouded ones plus ejector hooks, like this:

They're really nice, but I usually use the simple ones:

They take only .100"x.100" per pin, but of course the IDC still hangs over the ends. Without the ejector hooks, you do have to be careful not to bend the pins when unplugging the IDC from it.

To make it easier to get all the sizes correct in the first try, I recommend getting samples of all the parts, printing your design out on paper using full scale, and see if everything fits. And don't forget about the mating connectors which may be bigger than the PCB parts. Another useful trick is to get a piece of perfboard where you can stick components in to see how closely you can fit them together.

I've moved the pin headers even further apart and (as recommended) printed off a 1:1 scale image of the circuit.
There's a clear 10mm between the white bottom white outline of the address header and the top white outline of the data bus pin header. Both sides have 6mm clearance.

That gerbv tool is quite useful. I tested by gerber output using it and all looks ok. Have just sent the files off for PCB fabrication - I hope it all goes well! 15 days and £158 including VAT and tracked postage. I could have gotten another made at the same time for an extra £25-£30 or so, but I'm stretching things as it is.

Anyone familiar with producing gerbers with Eagle?
I've sent the gerber files for my project to PCBtrain and they have come back to advise that the drill file is missing.
When I generated my Gerbers in Eagle I went to CAM Processor, click FILE > OPEN > JOB
I then selected "gerb274x-4layer.cam" and ended up with the following tabs:
Component Side
Inner layer - Layer 2
Inner Layer - Layer 15
Solder Side
Silk screen CMP
Silk screen SOL
Solder stop mask CMP
Solder stop mask SOL
Cream frame CMP
Cream frame SOL

I cannot see one for DRILL. Shouldn't there be one?

I have found another Job template file called "gerb274x-mill-drill.cam". Do I need to run this as well?

You need excellon.cam

I found it just now and generated the drill files, but thanks for responding so quickly and for confirming what I thought :).
I'm just hoping I'll get the board back before Xmas. Just got to wait and see!

Just an FYI. I picked these up for those bus sockets:

Looks like the common-or-garden type, with 200mil+ of plastic on each side. They are nice and easy to work with if you are making up your own cables.

I'm not sure if you are into breadboarding, but if you are: it is easy to make up your own connectors to route the busses onto breadboard. Just solder a box header onto some strip board, and attach SIL pins to each side. I have bodged together headers of up to 40 pins this way. Depending on the type of strip board you have, you may have to break the copper down the middle, but this is fairly easy with a sharp scalpel.

I do some breadboarding to prove cirucits work, but not much beyond that. However, that's a good idea and I'll put it to use- thanks :).

Hi all

My 65C02 GPD PCB arrived today. Mostly looking good, although I mucked up the layering for the voltage regulator pad. Was supposed to have had the top layer exposed to a larger pad so I could solder it down and use the larger pad as a giant heatsink. Never mind.
So far I've only buzzed out the VCC and GND planes to ensure that they're not shorting then I'm going to go and check the buses. My only slight moan so far is that the silk screen isn't too great as it seems that there small breaks/misplacements in lines across the board. I've posted some pics below. I don't intend to take anyone to task for this, but wandered if anyone else would be bothered or is it that my expectations are too high?

Imperfections in the silk screen layer are quite common, unfortunately. It's usually not a very high definition process.

Ahh right. It's just that my last PCB (from the same place) was much better.

I've now soldered on the sockets, capacitors, resistors and am starting on the pin headers. I'll finish things off tomorrow and then start praying to the god of 6502's that it all works :D
