New encryption ransomware holds entire websites hostage November 10, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Linux-based web servers are the newest target of encryption ransomware.

Quote:
Many of the infected systems were accessed through a vulnerability in the Magneto CMS. A patch was issued to close this security hole on October 31st, but not all users will get the new version installed right away. The funds from the first wave of attacks could also be used to purchase a previously undisclosed exploit, which could widen the scope of attacks.

I'm posting this in hopes of preventing anything like this happening.

Probably the best defence is backups - I know Mike has that sorted for this site.

We're using Linux but not Magneto. My entire website is downloaded and backed up every night, and the backups are kept for six months before that space on the hard discs (plural, again for redundancy) is re-used.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

And fortunately: http://labs.bitdefender.com/2015/11/lin ... ption-key/

As for myself, all machines covered by Crashplan - endless and continuous backups, every version kept forever. In addition to that I of course don't let anything get access to accounts that can actually get enough access to encrypt anything.
