That sounds reasonable, although I don't think they have any way of knowing what the traffic is, do they? I get 350-500 page downloads per day, about 1200-1500 files per day when you include the pictures and diagrams in those pages.

When dealing with popular sites, a sample of user activity is going to give reasonable statistics - same principle as phone polls. So some small number of typical users can be instrumented to estimate the whole population. Alexa was a semi-public system - cooperating users installed a toolbar, and statistics were collected from that fraction.

These days, as the idea of valuing websites is based on advertising, the advertising providers themselves do the instrumenting. Sites that don't carry adverts won't be covered but don't generate ad revenue anyway.
Anyone inclined to be, let's say, cautious, about search providers being a privacy concern should be at least as cautious about advertisers. If you see ads on web pages, you are tracked. And you may sometimes get malware delivered. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvertisement)

Sites have registered bots and they read your cookies which tell them which sites you visit and they cross reference that with your name and credit card's information from purchases at stores. I saw specific advertising based on sites I visit and purchases. Look at the login here. You have a registered big, a google bot and yahoo bot. So you have all three major search engines here.

When you register a cell phone, one of the things these companies ask is for your tracking information like your social security number if you register through the phone or websites track your I.P. address. Sites can also know where you live based on your I.P. address.

When you send a message out through the internet, it gets stamped with a number from your hard drive and I don't know if there are unique numbers from your computer but you are being tracked.

Also, if you've ever sent out an email that someone didn't want, you should check a blacklist because your I.P. address is now blacklisted against certain sites so they can cut down on spam:

http://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

I called my ISP and they said if I want a new I.P. address, I had to turn the modem off when I go to bed and leave it off for a couple of hours to get unblacklisted.

When you register your computer, Microsoft makes you either connect through the internet or a phone line to a phone number to register your information. They want to know where you live to access the computer and or internet or you can't use your computer.

I also went to a certain computer store and I used my credit card so when I logged into a specific message board, I saw certain things advertised to me that only would have been advertised to me through that store so they are sharing information about you and me. Scary? Also when I visit a site on the web, I see advertisements from that visit on other sites because unless you clear your cookies, that site is reading your cookies about which websites you have visited. Welcome to big brother.

Also, not to complain but you could further ask Mike what function the Yahoo bot and Bing bot I see here does with the website. It might index the site for different search engines so that people can find 6502 on the web. Maybe he knows more than we know but we don't ask so we won't know but it is probably in the user agreements when he started this site so he would have to read the fine print and put it together because they might not tell us what they are doing but you would have to piece it together with the fine print.

Fortunately they always have us many miles away, in the wrong city.

Microsoft wants control. The easy way around that is to not use any MS software at all. I don't.

But yes, the surveillance is ridiculous. I get the ads on fb for things I was just looking at or just bought. I always click the thing to tell them I don't want to see this ad.

Google keeps a record of your searches too. To get away from that, use ixquick.com as your search engine. They don't keep your info at all. If for some reason you think you really want a Google search, use startpage.com. They do the Google search and pass the results to you, but they don't tell Google who wanted the info, and they don't keep that info either.

Wow, it was interesting (and nice) to see that a Russian site translated my wire-wrap Q&A page.

Anyway, is there interest in Daryl's (or similar) '802 module?

I'd be interested. Is he willing to make some more?

It's odd that WDC shelved the 802 and the smaller 816. Especially the smaller 816.
