Julius Schmidt built a 6502-compatible CPU out of 74HC parts, and it has a nice front panel too.

It's a stack of half a dozen perf boards, and is a microcoded design.

(I was thinking that 4MHz was beyond a TTL design, but it turns out that Bill Buzbee's machine also runs at that speed. His has an MMU and runs Minix... is not 6502-compatible.)

Me too! It can run at a slow speed to make that more appealing.

I notice that Dennis Kuschel's MyCPU is also a 74HC design, and runs at 8MHz. In that case, some half dozen people have built their own. See http://mycpu.eu
