Pin 1 on a NMOS 6502 is a ground pin and this is grounded on the Beeb PCB - bend this pin out if you are using a WDC 65C02 with the Vector Pull output - Other manufacturer's 65C02s still have this pin as a ground so this won't be a problem. Pins 5 & 36 (nc on an NMOS 6502) are not connected on the Beeb PCB.

The clock circuit in the Beeb shouldn't be a problem for a 65C02 - it's the 65C816 that causes problems as it doesn't have the seperate clock-in and clock-out pins. The 65C02 has a schmitt-trigger input on the clock pin and so it should cope with a less-than ideal clock waveform. I've had no problems using the older 65C02s in a Beeb but I've not tried a WDC one.

Older 65C22s (Such as the 65C22P2 banedon mentioned) will work in the Beeb but new WDC ones won't as they have totem-pole outputs on the IRQ pins instead of the open-drain outputs on the older devices and the Beeb uses wire-or on the IRQ line.

As BigEd says, the Burrr is caused by the sound chip not being initialised, so the operating system is either not starting or is unable to initialise the sound chip. As the sound chip is driven from the system VIA, this could be the culprit.

One thing to check for a non-starting beeb is the resistor and capacitor on the system VIA's reset pin - these reset the VIA seperately from the main system reset so the system can tell the difference between a power-on and pressing break. A fault on either of these two components can stop the system VIA from being reset and so stop the system working.

Pin 36 on the 'C02 must be pulled up to Vcc.
