CMD no more produces the 65SCxx series. Any idea how to get hold of a 6551 chip for RS232? I tried GOOGLE looking for 6551 and rs232 but did not find any obvious source.

www.jameco.com sells a 1MHz 6551 (not 65c51) for $3.95

The WDC website has announced it will start producing their 65c51.

I don't know when it will be available but I pan to buy several when they do.

Jameco sell the Rockwell version. Rockwell made both 1 MHz and 2 MHz versions but as Jameco only has one type "8bit" is certainly right that it is the 1 MHz version although this is not explicitly specified by Jameco.

I found a supplier at the National Vintage Communications Fair in Birmingham who had a bunch of old Apple ][ boards with 2MHz 6551s on them. So I bought 'em. I think he was glad to get the nasty modern semiconductors off his stall -- just about everything else at the fair was based on valves (vacuum tubes).

And I got a few more 65C51s from eBay. And they're still listed on the Cricklewood Electronics web site:

http://www.cricklewoodelectronics.com

But I suspect that a few weird suggestions from England aren't going to help you much! Sorry!

Buying in UK should be OK when living in Germany as it is inside EU and no annoying & expensive custom passage is required as when one buys something from US. Registing with Cricklewood the menu foresees the whole world as country of origin, so far it seems OK.

But actually trying to buy something one gets:

"Sorry, there is no available delivery method for your location"

Conclusion:

Cricklewood only sells to Britts. If they really still have some 6551 they have to be ordered in UK.

But in a year there should be WDC6551 available running at 14 MHz. And one can get one from Mike in a private letter without having to pass custom!
