I have some equipment with the R6511AQ microprocessor onboard. The processor is in a 64-pin QUIP. I have no manuals for this device. It is descended from the 6502 and seems to have many of the same instructions in eprom - at least I can decompile the software into a form that seems to make sense relative to a 6502, but there are opcodes that seem to make no sense at all.

I'd like to convert my equipment to something more recent, such as a '286 or even a Z80. To do this, I first have to find out exactly what my equipment is doing. I do not have access to, nor the time for using, a logic analyzer.

Do you know of any locations that have the data manuals for this specific processor? Because it is in a 64-pin QUIP, and not a 40-pin DIP, it does not match any of the other 65xx data manuals that I have.

I have the '87 databook with the R6511Q in the 64-pin QUIP. Is it the same thing? I could copy the 35 pages for you and send by USPS if you give me an address. I'm sure Rockwell would no longer care if I copy it. This microcontroller does not have the extra CMOS instructions except that it does have BBR, BBS, RMB, and SMB whose op codes end in 7 and F. Otherwise there may be data mixed into the code as parameters to pass to subroutines, for example, to display literal data.

As the application is proprietary, I can not give you any specific details, except to say that the current design exploits every feature and port available on the R6511Q.

Thank you for faxing the copy of the R6511Q manual. I am currently writing my own decompiler using the information from the manual. It looks like I will be able to use a vintage form of TASM (c. 1987) to re-compile and test my assumptions about this processor. I'll let you know what I can, as long as it does not violate any proprietary agreements with my current employer.

I used in past 6501Q.
In what I know 6511AQ is a faster version of 6501Q.
Both are no longer produced by Rockwell.
I can send digital copy (scanner photocopy) of the original Rockwell datasheet. Design replacements of 6501 could be some of the Mitsubishi microcontrollers of the 740 series.
