Super! Thanks, Ed! They never were cheap, but now I can go back and edit some posts to add the link. A handful of them is still a lot cheaper than making a single multilayer PC board, and if someone were timid about taking the time to learn a CAD and committing to an expensive multilayer board that may need changes or additions in the future, the WW PLCC sockets still make sense.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

What's that? :D

I did say more future-proof... maybe not semantically correct, but at least more realistic :)

Another alternative is to use ordinary through-hole sockets, combined with wire-wrap header pins... I did that for a prototype 22 years ago...

... of course, that may be the reason that said prototype is no longer working.

For USA it seems effective to search for "PLCC WIRE WRAP" - http://goo.gl/1rzxt

Ironwood Electronics still makes some of these type of sockets. The prices are not for the faint of heart or those retired on fixed incomes. :(

Ironwood has always been extreeeemely expensive, charging several times as much as some of their competitors for the same thing.

PLCC wire-wrap sockets are massively overpriced. I created my own by getting a couple of SIP wire-wrap rows and then breaking them up. Looks / works identical for a fraction of the price!

Don't forget eBay btw! I've bought a boatload of CPLDs / FPGAs from companies in China / Hong-Kong for very reasonable prices.
