the 6501 required an external 2-phase non-overlapping clock. It was made to be very compatible with the 6800, but I think was only made for a very short time. [ Has anyone ever seen one?? ].
and today I turned up a couple of pictures of Digital Group boards:
Eric Smith shows a 6501 in a lidded package.
Bryan Blackburn said
in 2008 that he'd got his working too.
(The 6501 was MOS's first product, and while it
might have been intended to be sacrified it certainly wasn't widely sold. Motorola sued because it was pin compatible with 6800, and MOS settled for a
reported $200k - but with freedom to sell the 6502, even though it's
nearly the same chip.)
