In the article below the author describes how to build a Forth from scratch. While it's for the i386, it's interesting to see how much of it is similar to various 6502 or 1802 Forths I have encountered.

This should not be a big shock, because like most Forth's, it includes a small machine code kernel and then Forth written in Forth.
