I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I'm not exactly sure where to ask this since I'm a keen, green newbie.

Anyway, I'm just curious as to whether or not certain CBM/MOS 65xx chips are still in production, just under a different company. More specifically, I'm looking for the 6560 (VIC), 6567 (VIC-II), or 6581/6582/8582 (SID) chips to wire up to create a simple microcomputer.

If they aren't in production anymore, does anyone have any other suggestions for chips to use? I'd say that an AY-3-8910, a YM2151, a YM3812, or a YM2610 might be good alternatives for the SID (provided that they're still in production), and the 6845 or 6847 might be good alternatives to the VIC video chips, provided that they have text modes. More importantly, is it possible to wire them up to 6502 chips? I'd assume that the answer is yes, given that Atari used a 6502 as the main sound processor to drive a YM2151 and a POKEY pair in their Paperboy arcade cabinet.
