Does anyone have any experience with this chip? I got my two from some old discarded Commodore 64's. One is a MOS 6526R4 and the other a MOS 6526. I'm using it in my single board computer (http://65c02.tripod.com/) and I've noticed its running a little hot. Is this normal? I used reference material from the C64 Programer's Reference guide (yes, I still have the one I bought in 1984) to wire and program it. It seems to work fine, the 8 bit ports, the timers, and the TOD clock. Its just very warm to the touch.Thanks for any advice you can offer!Daryl

I haven't used it myself-- but is the current within spec? Some of those NMOS parts did run pretty warm. If you're concerned about it, you can get one of those DIP heat sinks. The cooling fins typically run the length of the IC, about 1/8" tall. Put a little thermal compound between the IC and the sink. If it's not self-adhesive, you might have to strap the heat sink on with very small zip-ties. I had to do this with a pair of Z8536's I used years ago. They ran very hot without the heat sinks, and there was no CMOS version as far as I could find out. Those same ICs have lasted over eight years now of being on all day every day. I'm sure that would not be the case without the heat sinks.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't measured the current of the 6526 by itself, but the whole board is drawing only 83mA. The specs say the 6526 can draw 70-100mA. I was considering using a heat sink. Your experience shows its the best solution.

Hi Daryl,

Most of the old NMOS chips run warm, even at or below their rated speeds. You can see this for yourself by opening up a working C64 or VIC-20.

The Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference Guide contains stripped-down versions of the 6526, 6581, and 6561 datasheets. You can get more information from the full datasheets on www.6502.org
