Also available in some glue logic is 74ABT, which is about as fast as you are going to get. I tend to stick with 74ABT and 74AC. Many are also available in SOIC packages...a bit more a challenge to solder, but more economical with board real estate.

From Mouser, I just ordered some 74ABT573's in DIPs, and some 74ABT00's and 04's in SOIC since they didn't have them in DIP. I will probably get the SOIC-to-DIP adapters for the SOICs. I would still like to find the '521 and '138 in ABT, if anyone knows a source.

Mouser now has the 74ABT00 and '04 in DIP, so I ordered those. They still don't have the 74ABT30 in any package, nor the '521, '688, or '138. Is there any other 5V 74xx logic family that's significantly faster than 74AC/74ACT?

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

74F is in the same range, speed-wise. For example, prop delay on a 74F00 is 2.4 to 6.0 ns, taken from the Fairchild data sheet. Mouser lists a lot of 74F parts, although it seems more of them are small-outline packages than DIP.

In my next SBC I will probably use more 50-mil type packages, since the oldest grandson has no trouble hand soldering those. :) Can't say the same for gramps (me) though. Somewhere along the way, I hope to work out an SMT soldering procedure that doesn't involve having to use an iron on every terminal. Our toaster-oven is starting to look attractive, although, for some unfathomable reason, my wife is not enthralled with the idea.

Take a look at the 74F30.
