I am wanting to work with a small 6502 system (not 65816) and I'm considering ordering some of Daryl Rictor's SBC 2.5 board via ExpressPCB.

Before I do that -- is there anyone who has one of these boards (populated or not) that doesn't want it anymore and would be willing to part with it?

Alternatively -- anyone want to go in on boards with me? Minimum seems to be 2, but if we get it up to 4 they wind up being a bit over $30 each.

I have a couple of rev. 2.3 that I got for a project that I never went through with. One of them has all the sockets and pin headers, and the other one is bare. I wouldn't mind selling them, even at a loss.

I've been thinking about building a retro computer for some old school robotics projects. Looking at all of the online plans the SBC 2.5 looks the best. I know this is an old thread, but has anyone done a a bulk order since this was posted?

I used ExpressPCB to price a board and the minimum size is two boards and the cost with shipping was around $110. Most of that cost was setup fees, so that's not the way to go unless you are part of a bulk order.

Garth do you still have any of the 2.3's left over? Do the instructions for the 2.5 work with those?

I might be able to fabricate the PCB myself using toner transfer, but the through holes wouldn't be plated which would make assembly a bit trickier. The other possibility is wire wrapping Douglas Beattie's DIY 6502 which looks possible, but tedious.

No, they were subsequently spoken for, so I don't have them anymore. I have my own website now (and I edited my post above to make the signature line show) and one of the major features is 6502 PRIMER: Building your own 6502 computer. (It is actually a set of 22 articles, covering many aspects of the design, construction (including wire-wrap and making your own boards), goals, debugging, and interfacing applications of a home-made 6502 SBC.)

$110 sounds high for some reason. Which board service did you price? Are you in the USA?

I live in the US, I chose standard service and shipping. I reran it again and it was 104.31 for a minimum order of two boards. The setup fees were $63 ($61 + $1 per board), the area cost was $27.30, the drilling cost for 462 holes was $2.31, and shipping was 11.70. It would only be $136 for four boards, so it isn't the per board cost but the setup fees that contribute the bulk of the costs.

I thought that Daryl had designed the SBC 2 series to use EPCB's mini-board service, which should be a bit cheaper.

When I tried mini-board I got an error that a MiniBoard is only allowed 350 holes while the layout includes 719. So I chose standard instead.

My SBC-1 used the mini-board service. The later SBC's were all too big. As I recall, I did at least 16 boards per bulk purchase, which brought the per board cost down to the $20-$25 range. I don't have any boards left. If you put together a bulk order, I would be interested in getting some extras. That way I can keep some around for future buyers.

There are four radio buttons in the UI, and it was button 4 "MiniBoard Service".

Daryl, I just priced 16 board and the per board cost was $20.56 which is pretty reasonable. I may put together a bulk order, but I'll wait a bit to see how the W65C134 Prototype thread works out. The built in ROM monitor could solve the problem of needing an EEPROM programmer.

Additionally, looking at the specs. 1MHz, DIP14 and 5V, I’d give it a high chance that it’s the correct one.

For the really inexpensive parts, let me recommend buying lots more, not just one or two. If I buy just one, I'm likely to drop it and run over it with the wheels of my desk chair or damage it some other way, or I'll need another one soon for another project and wish I didn't have to take the time to order it again. For inexpensive parts, I always get extras.

On the headers, for this kind of thing, I would buy them in longer strips and cut to the required number of pins on an as-needed basis.

I would also recommend replacing 74LS with 74HC or 74AC. There's virtually no reason to use LS anymore. CMOS can pull up much harder than LS, it's much lower power, and even HC is usually (although not always) a little faster than LS, and AC is three times the speed. LS inputs will load down a circuit much more heavily than any of the CMOS ones will.
