Long story short, I'm tired of soldering and wire-wrapping. My eyes are getting too old to solder 300-400 connections for a small project.

So...I'm just going to start taking advantage of these cheap PCB companies for prototypes and design a few boards.

I have one that is almost done but I used all through-hole components. But the more I read, the more I notice that smaller components have too many advantages despite their small size.

I am toying with the idea of changing my design to use a PLCC-44 65C02 and a socket. It seems to be easy enough to work with and large enough that I won't need a microscope to solder them (I have a hot air reflow gun for other SMD components).

Can anyone tell me if the following two components would be a correct fit?

On the datasheet of the socket, it says it's a 1.27mm pitch. But I can't find in the CPU datasheet the pitch for it? There's also a 2.54mm pitch which I'm more familiar with. I just don't know enough about PLCC-44 to know which to get.

The 1.27mm refers to the spacing between leads on the PLCC. That's .050", as all PLCCs use AFAIK. The 2.54mm (.100") spacing refers to the thru-hole pins of the socket that go into the PCB. They're in two rows to get it all in there without putting the pins as close together as the PLCC's leads. Anyway, it'll work. See the socket's .pdf data sheet linked on the page you linked to for the socket.

In short, yes they'll fit.

As Garth explained, the pin pitch on the socket is what you need to be concerned about as you do your PCB layout. 2.54mm is 0.100 inches, the long-time industry standard for the much digital electronics. PLCC packages are 1.27mm or 0.050 inches pitch. That would only be a concern if you intended to solder the MPU directly to your board.
