Greetings:

Can anyone point me in the right direction for learning about GALs, please? Also, do you know of any decent designs for a DIY GAL programmer?

I'm currently reading this article; GALS for Electronics Hobby

These will most likely work with Lattice GALS but most likely will NOT work with Atmel GALs, but I make no promises.

Search this forum for G540 and you will find some discussion on this programmer.

My older Genius NSP programmer works with Lattice devices but not with Atmel devices.

I can confirm this issue as well on my Genius G540 programmer. I think Atmel is more proprietary with their programming algorithm.

Ditto with my TOPS850 programmer. It thinks that it has successfully programmed an Atmel GAL but the GAL doesn't work.

Thanks for the info, guys.

How about this programmer? It lists the Lattice GAL22V10 devices in its list of supported devices?

Also, I didn't see any TOP850 programmers listed on ebay but there are some TOP853 programmers. Can I assume those are the next generation of the older TOP850?

Probably, but who knows for sure. Documentation is always a problem with this stuff.

Hi Michael,

One thing you should research is the availability of Lattice GAL's. They stopped making them a few years back (exact date anyone??) and they are harder to find and the cost is going up on the ones that are left. I'd hate to see you spend a lot on a programmer and THEN discover that the GAL's arte not available.

From the Lattice product change notice (PCN) announcing the discontinuation of the GAL product line:

  • Last Time Buy Order Date November 19, 2007
  • Last Shipment Date May 19, 2008

That's from PCN #06A-07.

Daryl's right. Atmel is the only significant source for new GALs at this time, although you can still find Lattice ones through some suppliers and on eBay. The problem is finding a burner that "knows" the proprietary Atmel algorithms. If the TOPS853 is similar to the TOPS850 then you'd be out of luck. You're probably better focusing on low end CPLDs, although hobby-friendly 5 volt examples are becoming a bit scarce here and there. Again, Atmel continues to produce 5 volt CPLDs, but I'm not certain what the programming options are beyond purchasing their burner unit (which I have).

I built a ByteBlaster from this schematic (with a few mods) and it works fine.
I have tested it with the Atmel ATF1504AS and ATF1508AS CPLD's. Should of course also work with the 1502 as well.

I had to remove the (5) 2.2k pullup resistors for it to operate stable with my parallel port.
If you disconnect the 100 ohm resistor that goes to pin 14 of the parallel port and ground it, then it will work as an Atmel ISPMV cable.

For programming software just use Atmel ISP (free download from Atmel), tested with version 6.7
