I don't know if people know this, but the Renesas 74X series uses the 6502 instruction set.

It doesn't have the C02 extensions (STZ, etc) but it has some of the Rockwell extensions (BBC, BBS) and some additional instructions such as LDM, MUL, DIV, CLB, SEB, etc.

Some of them have built-in LCD drivers, so they might be really useful for a small project.

Aren't Renesas the new name for the Mitsubishi microcontroller group?
There's a few of us who've used the 740 family for projects already and there I have a version of EhBASIC for some of them.

The only issue with Renesas is availability of the line. They seem MUCH more interested in the H8 (Hitachi) series than the Mitsubishi series...

Hi Everyone,

My guess is that before they merged, the H8 line out-sold the Mitsubishi line by a wide margin. I consider the H8 a "classic" 8-register architecture.
Note, a lot of microprocessor architecture theory points to 8-registers as being the "sweat spot" as far as number of registers and length of opcode.

Time will tell.

Cheers,

Paul
