Yes, making progress. I guess I was sleeping through the last page of posts.

BTW, the probes say x10 / x1 60MHz on them

They're only 60MHz in the x10 position (ie, the switch on the probe itself in in that position). In the x1 position they're probably only good for a couple MHz. Do take care of them. Good probes are not cheap to replace. And yes, the 'scope and probes will have to be good for many times your maximum frequency to semi-accurately show what's going on in your square waves, because of the harmonics it takes to form them.

You can make the pictures show up in the post itself by doing:

although I hid something else in there to make the tags show and keep them from trying to do their job. I had to leave the "Disable BBCode" box unchecked so the [quote] above would work.

If your half meter of wire is between the 9V battery and the regulator, and the regulator has input capacitors, it's ok.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

I've recently looked into the price of some spare probes and you're not wrong on the cost!
Image wise: as the images are so large I didn't want to cause problems for people with lower internet bandwidth, but wanted to keep the detail/res.

Anyhoo, down side is that my RAM, although not causing data bus problems, is throwing the wrong values when reading. Both of the 62256s exhibit the issue and I've double checked all the connections.
Is the 62256 that you guys use the same as this one? <URL removed as no longer valid>

Just an update. I've soldered soldered everything together and here's the "lovely" result :). I put it on veroboard/stripboard, but I think in the future I'll use single pad prototype board instead.
It does work though. Now going to try the VIA. Any bets? :D

BTW the small circuit board is the single cycle CPU stepper (many thanks to Garth for the initial circuit diagram! I managed to squeeze it in as small a space as possible).
