Note that any system that uses ICs from this century, is a fast (high-frequency) circuit (on the order of hundreds of MHz); modern chips have very fast transition times, thus introducing high frequencies. A slow clock simply triggers your high-frequency circuit every now and then...

When I said "runs very slowly" I meant the Ø2 rate, not the rise and fall times of device outputs. Two very different animals.

I guess PLDs may be cheaper now.. Still an interesting story on how things were.

My hobby has been to make things for my old commodore machines. And they are quite slow at around 1MHz clock rate...which often gives a headache with newer components.

It took a while for me to interface a newer CPLD to that old 1MHz 6502bus and its slow components. It tends to give alot of digital noise around the transition point as the Input interface is just too fast for its own good.
