... that is the question.

Hi! Very quick question: I use screws and bolts as either stands for my board, or to connect them to an enclosure. Should I be connecting those to GND or something?

What about the shielding on a USB port, should that be connected to GND?

Lastly, what about those D-Sub connectors (VGA, Serial, etc), should I be connecting their shielding to GND?

I have not been connecting any of those to GND as of yet, but apparently there is the option to do so. Just not sure if that is helpful, or even good, or if it doesn't matter at all.

I like to ground them just so reaching to touch any of them will discharge static without damaging things. It won't affect performance though.

I ground everything I can that isn’t connected to VCC or an active circuit. That includes the standoffs and screws. As Garth said, it’s handy to be able to touch a screw and safely get rid of static. Beats having a chip do it. :shock:

Grounding the metal housings of sockets may help keep a lid on EMI, although the effect is minor if the entire PCB isn't enclosed in a metal chassis, box, etc.
