I'm working on a 6502 trainer computer similar to the KIM-1. I have a 4x4 matrix of the Grayhill buttons and I really like them. However, they are really expensive. For a one-off project, I can live with them. But I was wondering if there is something similar but less money?

I really prefer a nice, square push-button for a project like this. I'm not a fan of using tactile switches with the key name printed on the silk screen. Mainly because I'd want to change the buttons around.

Suggestions are appreciated.

NKK has some nice ones. Remember the Omron B3F line also has larger tactile switches and 12mm square keycaps that come in lots of colors and are big enough to put the labels on the keycaps themselves.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

I've used the B3F keys for more than one build.

I found the 12mm keycaps on a 15mm (well 0.6") spacings work remarkably well. Not quite full size, but better than a calculator.

It's just a shame the "permanent" ink markers aren't, and the ink rubs off fairly quickly.

Those both look great. But I'm only finding the switches or the caps.

Do you normally buy them separately? Or, is there a tactile switch with square cap included?

The one thing I do like about the Grayhill is that you can use custom inserts. Maybe that's why they are so pricey.

They're separate as far as I can tell, probably since there's quite a few different cap colours to choose from/
