I just saw this video on Youtube and was quite intrigued:

At first I was very puzzled on the purpose of the big box behind a Vic-20. Turned out to be an expansion box build by an anonymous electronics hobbyist and supported memory expansion, video out with 80 column mode and a RS-232 interface.

The design consists out a zillion of wires, but very neatly done.
