Hi there,

anyone knows more details about the sunplus 8502, a 6502 derivative that is supposedly used in the HP35S calculators?

http://www.eetimes.com/design/embedded/ ... geNumber=1

Thanks
André

Hmm...the MPU in the Commodore 128 was an 8502. Maybe this microcontroller contains an 8502 with a mask ROM attached in some way. :?

Sunplus split into four companies. Generalplus is the company the now makes the ICs. I suspect HP is using a GPL085A but I can't find a datasheet.

http://www.generalplus.com/product.php?prot_no=1&func=sh

Scroll down to the 'Low Voltage LCD Controller' section

(Parenthetically: Sunplus 8502 is not the same chip as the CSG 8502. Much like the CSG 6501 is not the same as the MOS 6501... there don't seem to be enough four digit numbers!)

A previous post linked to this discussion where we read that the Sunplus 8502 is a core, not a chip, and the chip we seek is a SPLB31A.

Cheers
Ed

BTW I found more details on the sunplus 8bit processor core: http://www.sunplusit.com/english/produc ... tures.aspx

Great! There's a datasheet for a related chip here: http://mcu.sunplusmcu.com/soft/1502A_Data_sheet.pdf which details the CPU programmer's model: very much a 6502.
Found by searching for ["182 instructions" sunplus]

As the link has rotted, here's the Internet Archive to the rescue:

Just two key components
On one hand, I was disappointed to see what was actually inside the calculator. That's because it's not a very interesting design. It's just two key components--an 8502 microcontroller and a flash memory chip. Both of those parts are covered by a blob of epoxy, as you can see in Figure 2. The processor is under the bigger blob.
The 8502 is designed by Sunplus Technology, a Taiwanese company. It's based on the 6502, an 8-bit processor that first appeared on the Commodore 64, which was popular around the same time that I purchased my 15c. The flash memory is a generic part, and no specific vendor is used. It's generally based on whatever is available at the right price at the right time.
The 8502 that's used here also contains the system's power management and all the typical chip-set functions. This includes an LCD diver, a keyboard controller, and so on.

Unfortunately the CPU description is minimal - we don't even get an instruction count, let alone a programmer's model.

Edit: the same datasheet appears presently as the renamed GPLB31A:

But at least we now know that the 6502 first appeared in the Commodore 64...... !

I suppose that's a good indication of the depth of research going into the article!
