Hi all
I used number of NVRam chips in my designs .. but lot of people put off them due to having to use universal programmers to program them .. Here is an example of being able to use Arduino MEGA board as DIY programmer .. which is not too expensive to make and have your self a cheap NVRAM programmer .. Still needs a fair bit of work .. but will do for basic use ... Comments appreciated

I wasn't too concerned about the having to program them; I'd need to do that anyway, no matter what non-volatile storage I used.
My biggest issue with nvRAMs is that they usually contain a battery that can't be replaced, and that battery runs down over time. When it does, it's no longer a non-volatile storage device.
I'm not particularly comfortable using something that's going to fail eventually. Especially when it will do so regardless of how it is used.

But that's just why I didn't use one. There have got to be applications where that's not an issue, because there is clearly a market for them.

Be sure to see the simple DIY way to battery-back SRAM at viewtopic.php?p=32004#p32004 .

There is also FRAM (Ferroelectric RAM). RAMTRON used to make these in through-hole parts, but they were bought up by Cypress. Cypress still make the FRAM, but the most manageable case style is SOP. Not too bad to deal with - however, you can still find the RAMTRON through-hole items on eBAy quite often.

I'm necessarily frugal so the biggest "put off" for me is the price of the NVRAM chips...

I've got quite a lot of the 8 KiB version of those RAMTRON's. They used to send them to me for free (samples).
