Hmm, needs another 200 backers by Sunday - or a big donation...

The part about scans being non-searchable is valid, but there's no reason that scans can't be of super high quality or be put in .pdf files. The only drawback I see to scans besides the non-searchable nature is the huge file size. If Mr. Tripp doesn't get the funding, I think he ought to just go ahead and scan it. It would be great to have this resource online.

This Kickstarter project is from Robert M. Tripp, the original publisher of MICRO magazine. He was generous to give us permission to post all of the MICRO issues so I've backed this project to support him.

In spite of not getting enough Kickstarter backing, we went ahead and completed the new version of "What's Where in the Apple" -- and it came out great. Go to http://www.ewwa.us for a brief description and some sample pages. It is priced at $19.95 but is available until the end of August at $15.00.

Everything was completely redone, new figures and tables, Atlas and Gazetteer in clean tabular form with alternating color bars etc. In Adobe PDF format that may be viewed on any platform with the free Adobe Reader. Search, bookmarks, highlight and many other features supported.

Wouldn't that be an illegal copy? If you find some scan somewhere when the real deal still exists it's almost universally an illegal copy (with some very few exceptions).

Illegal? That has to do with the court system and someone's arbitrary decisions. What's more important for me - is it immoral? The idea that someone claims to 'owns the rights' to an out of print (outdated and unmarketable technical manual) Apple 2 book is really funny, especially after abandoning it for 40 years and letting it float around the internet. It's like the 'right of way' when you drive - the only thing you can do with it is yield it to others - you can't really sell it, even if you kickstarter it...

I would have a lot more respect for the publisher had he announced that he is putting the book into public domain. I would send him $20 just for that, and I am sure many of you would, making him a lot more money than what he got.

I've thought a lot about this and similar situations. Here is what I would like to do, and perhaps you can help.

I would like to send some money to the writer of the book, William F. Luebbert. He is the person who wrote the book, and he deserves a thank you and some compensation from me.

We live in a different world now. The publisher, the distributor, the middleman is not strictly necessary now - we can get digital copies of anything, anytime. The distribution costs are gone. The middlemen, once essential and well paid, are obsolete (having secured copyrights and trademarks). They are holding on by a legal thread to their useless positions.

The same digital environment that gives us access to everything digital allows us to pay the content creator. You can buy a CD - your $15 will go mostly to the record industry and a few pennies to the artist. Or having obtained it in another way, you can send $5.00 or whatever directly to the artist - that is a lot more than the CD sale would net the artist.

To make things right I've been tracking down authors and other content creators whose work I appreciate and sending them modest amounts of money. I suggest you try it. I know personally that it makes a difference to receive a token of appreciation from a user, a reader or a listener. And if a few of us send money, it may help financially too.

I truly believe we can do the right thing ourselves, without the 'help' of large organizations or threat of punishment.

[edit]P.S. Having re-read this... Mr. Tripp deserves recognition for his efforts in the past. I remember buying his magazine back in the day (paying for it). I do find it relaxing and sometimes inspiring to leaf through old issues (less so with digital).

Thank you, Mr. Tripp. Although this project was perhaps a little misguided, I do hope you find a way to apply your knowlege and experience to inspire us, the remaining retro-users, and the new, kickstarting generations of the 6502-curious. And perhaps make some money doing it.
