Since every C64 and C128 uses an NMOS 6510 or derivative, it is guaranteed that software using illegal opcodes will run on every C64/C128. Some games use them, afaik Arkanoid. Of course, demos use them a lot. I also believe that GEOS uses them, but I am not 100% certain on this.

I've also heard that GEOS does (in fact I seem to remember a magazine article at the time touting that as one of the reasons GEOS was so fast), but I've also been told it will work with the SuperCPU. I don't think both can be true.

I wonder how well the emulators emulate the undocumented opcodes. That would be a good way to find out.

Successful C64 emulators certainly emulate all the illegals and many of the hardware quirks, or else too much software wouldn't run on them.

GEOS has been reverse engineered into a code base that assembles byte-for-byte with the originals, so you could scan it for illegals: https://github.com/mist64/geos

But it too will not make everyone happy - a lot of people who have fixated on a computer from the 80s are remarkably inflexible!

That's true. As an avid collector of vintage hardware, I lean on the side of traditionalism. Meaning, keep the original hardware as close to the original as possible. However, I bend for certain conveniences such as modern storage, better displays, etc.

Some people are so uptight about it, they won't even take the yellow off the plastic. Because, it "was meant to be". lol

Hmmm... so not exactly "running circles around a SuperCPU," in fact not as fast as a SuperCPU if the latter running software written to take advantage of its 16-bit registers and added capabilities.

Which is pretty rare on a C64. I only know of one game specifically written for C64 + SuperCPU.

This one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQpLAIkNVLE&t=11m11s

Anyone create one of these in FPGA format (that's easy to install) will be instantly famous and rich beyond belief. Well, famous. OK, famous in the C64 community.

I made one which seems to be faster than the SuperCPU but I'm still waiting on the rich and famous part... :)
