The SYM-1 itself is based on the KIM-1, and there was a lawsuit about it.
It was eventually dropped IIRC because it wasn't similar enough.

I concur with BDD - it's probably not a problem to produce it if you remove the Synertek-related markings on the PCB.

There's a micro-KIM that is based on the KIM-1, and afaik they haven't had any legal problems.

Basically it's only worth suing you if there's a lot of money involved, and it's not worth suing you unless you're making at least a few hundred thousand or maybe a few million per year with it.

After referring this matter to House Harris Legal Department and lengthy deliberations of that most august body, the answer has come back....Go Go Go with the project.

I also consulted with the law firm Juste, Trie and Kollekt for an opinion. They said continue onward but delete the Sym artwork.

If you navigate to http://www.synertek.com it brings up some online game website.

Apparently whoever owns the Synertek trademark doesn't care enough to retrieve the domain name.

Has anyone heard any more about this board? I'd love one to play with.

BTW I have 10 or so 6532s and a huge number of 6551s knocking around. Maybe we could do a trade / swap / whatever so that a few others that want to build one of these can have the chips and I can have a bare board, eh?
