Here's a short textual interview from a 1986 "Compute!" where Steve Wozniak talks about the IIGS project and the 65816.

He was hoping for an 8MHz design but it got scaled back (to a shade under 3MHz)

I recall that interview. Particularly telling was Woz's comment at the end:


    Wozniak: For the home, I still usually recommend the II over the Mac. If you are an AppleWorks person, the II is all you need. And, as I said, I love the IIGS.

The Macs of the time, of course, were a closed system...zilch expandability. For a hardware type like Wozniak, being forced to use a Mac would have been the computer equivalent of being put in jail.
